Consider this article a golden invitation to you. It just may be the kick in the pants you’ve been needing for quite some time. There is only one thing that you need to do…fail! That’s right, fail. This may sound just a bit odd to you, but allow me to explain.

People have been failing since the beginning of time. People have also been succeeding since the beginning. The question then, is, ‘What ame first?’ The answer of course is failure.

This is may help how to make it happen.

Failing is a common part of life. It touches every person throughout life in many ways. Another question that bears asking is, ‘What do we make of failing?’ Can we use it as a motivation? Can we use it as a tool? Can we just ignore it? We can do all of these, and more. The precise answer to this matter is what determines where failure does or does not take you. You see, you really can fail forward.

Picture this if you will: You are all ready to go on vacation to Hawaii. Wow. Congratulations, I hear it’s beautiful. You are going to do everything. See the volcanoes, parasail, snorkel, deep-sea fish, sunbathe and maybe even get on a surfboard. You will definitely try one of those island drinks! You are all set to go and it is only 2 days away. You are excited. Bad news. You can’t find your travel bags. You just had them 6 months ago, but now, they are no where in sight. You look for a total of twenty minutes and then quit. You call the booking agent for the trip, and let her know you won’t be going. She tries to persuade you to ‘maybe look a little harder’ or to ‘just get other travel bags.’ It’s no use, you will not budge and she can’t make you. You’ll lose all your money paid because it was such a good deal, you had to pay up front.

Does this sound feasible? Not really. Most folks would just go ahead and borrow or buy another set for the trip. But first, you would scour the house for yours. You would come up with solution after solution. You would put forth great effort to get this done. I reckon you might be willing to get on the plane without any luggage at all if that was the difference between staying or going.

Well, it seems a little strange that we aren’t willing to go the extra mile for much more important matters than a one-time trip. The same sort of perseverance you displayed in locating the luggage (or, at least solving the dilemma) needs to be utilized in everyday life. A small failure cannot keep you off of that plane to success. The determining factor in where you will vacation with the rest of your life is your persistence in failing. Not just failing, but failing forward.

I urge you to get on that plane. I can assure you it is worth the effort and so much more.

Too often it is that we get caught up in our own life. We get caught up in our own problems. We focus on our own self-importance. The ‘why me’ syndrome. Not only do we forget to stop and smell the roses ourselves, but we forget that others might benefit from smelling them also.

You see friends, we live in a world of hustle and bustle. The next this and the next that. We get so busy with the latest technologies, we pass up the very ones that the technology was created for in the first place. We overlook our fellow man, woman, and child.

This may help how to make it happen.

Today you have a chance to be a hero to someone. You have the choice to be a hero. Today (not tomorrow) you can make a difference to somebody. You can choose today to be the difference in someone’s life.

You know, it really can be as simple as a smile. It may be a tiny thing to you, but, it can mean the world to somebody else. It can be a word of encouragement. It can be a hug. A phone call. A tweet. A text. An email. Friend, it can be so many different things. But, they all make the same point,” I feel your pain. I care. You matter. You are important. You mean the world to me. I love you. I’m here for you. I’m sorry. You can. You will. I believe in you.”

Is there somebody you know that could benefit from a timely word or action? How about your Mom? An aunt? Your child? A friend? A stranger? Let me ask a better question. Is there anyone you know that wouldn’t benefit?

Life is so short. Make it something special. Make a difference. Make It Happen For Someone Else.

Today you will encounter a number of people at school, work, or play. Start off with a smile and go from there. It can be the mailman, a cashier, a neighbor. You may drive to Grandma’s house. Invite a family to dinner Pick up the phone. Get outside your comfort zone. Someone will be glad that you did. You will have made a difference that may make all the difference. Today has power.

The best part of all is that you will have made a difference to you. You will be smiling on the outside, and, on the inside. Be careful, though, because it is contagious, and you just may want to do it again tomorrow.

I love a good story. Non-fiction. I enjoy reading about how some poor dude from the poor side of town with poor parents and poor friends made it big. There are plenty of Bill Gates in the world. Folks that came from money. Guys that caught the ‘breaks’. They went to the best schools that money could buy.

Think about this for a moment. If you took 1,000 folks and gave them exactly the same opportunities that Bill Gates had, wouldn’t there be at least a few that would be in a similar situation? Bill had some serious opportunities others just wouldn’t have had. I’m not knocking Bill Gates at all. In fact, I use Microsoft Word all the time. But, I reject the notion that he is a one in a million type of cat. He is a prime example of being born into the right place at the right time. If you read his story, you will see that he came from money (right place). He got into a field that was new (right time).

This may help the key to getting anything.

Some of you might be thinking that I must have it in for Gates. I can assure you I don’t. I would love to meet the guy. I would learn whatever I could from him. I am big fan of his philanthropic work.

But, ponder this.

Remember the one in a million example. Now let’s change things around a little. Well, a lot. Let’s take the same William Henry Gates III, and instead of having him go to Lakeside School in Seattle, he attends Julian High in Chicago.

Side note: Lakeside is a private prep school that sends 99% of its students to college.

Now, instead of Lakeside, Bill gets to attend Julian High School where the dropout rate was 36% in 2010. Would Bill have overcome the odds and fought his way to the top? Would he have created Microsoft? That would be less likely than the Cubs winning the Series this year. In fact, you could say that would be one in a billion. Think about what would have needed to happen to have duplicated his business success. I’m not against money. I rather enjoy what it affords me. But, I am for the underdog.

If you are an underdog, don’t quit. You can make it. You may not create a Microsoft, but, then again, you just may be that one in a billion. I’d love to meet you some day. I know I’d learn a lot from you.

Last night (yes, on a school night!) I took my baby girl (13) and big boy (6) on a mini-adventure. We had spent several hours digging our neighbors and selves out of the snowy armageddon that was Blizzard 2011. We also took the time to build a tunnel in a deep pile of blizzard. Because, we had to. We were prepared to park on the couch and sip some cocoa, compare aches and pains, but, what fun would that be? Instead, I warmed ‘the Jeep’, got a sleddin’ tube and started blowing it up. Anticipation was too much for my six year old. He isn’t big on the cold and the shoveling had pretty much did him in. But, seeing the excitement build in my daughter and I, he was in.

This may also help how to live a great life.

We had bought ‘the Jeep’ to pull behind our 30′ RV. This isn’t a Jeep commercial, but drive one sometime and you may be writing your own story! Never having been 4-Wheeling, I wasn’t sure if I was missing out on something or not. Trying it with no experience is like riding a bike for the first time. Who says kids get to have all the fun?

Back to last night. Okay, so we had this blizzard come through and dump 20″, or so, of the pretty white stuff. We hopped in ‘the Jeep’ and looked for a parking lot paved with powder. I remembered a spot close to home and was hopeful that the dreaded plow hadn’t yet arrived. It hadn’t. The parking lot was huge without concrete parking blocks (more on that later). The inner tube we had wasn’t taking kindly to the windchill factor (-6). I tried using an air mattress blower with some success. When it was good enough, I tied a rope to it and connected the other end of the rope to the bike rack. Now, it was ready to be ridden. As I finished up, a dark blue Tahoe entered the parking lot. I wasn’t sure if they were planning on parking there but that would have killed that spot for us. It continued toward us and stopped. The window came down. I noticed quickly there were police officers inside. The one driving looked and saw what we were about to do and said with a glint in his eye, “Nice.” And, as an afterthought, remembering duty,” Be careful”. I was even more stoked now because we had been officially commissioned My son was bundled to the extent that he had the ‘penguin walk’ downpat. He had his burglar mask on and was ready to ride. My daughter, always up for adventure (when I prod her enough) had three pairs of gloves on. Not sure, but that may have been breaking a snow law. Needless to say, they were both ready to ride. After they got situated on the tube, I slowly pulled ‘the Jeep’ forward, and, it was on. I would speed up on the staightaways we were making, slow into the turns and then speed out the turns. I envisioned that this tube about 12′ to my rear was chasing me. It was a blast watching the tube swing wide on turns. When little dude and dudette had enough they would shout. At this point I would gently slow down until stopped, put in neutral, put emergency brake on, jump out, run back and yank little dude off of tube, shake some snow off and put him in ‘ the Jeep’ to warm. Then, we would play the same game again and again. I don’t know who had more fun. Maybe I did, because I got to stay warm the whole time. It was sweet to see (save, for the police suv) our lone patterns in the lot. I gather that it will be hard to see a snow fall without having this sweet memory play back.

A few words of caution. It is best to have an extra person to keep watch. My wife had come with during the blizzard the night before (she pulled me on a snowboard!). She wasn’t up for it two nights in a row. ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY check the lot first for anything that may be sticking up. Even if you are familiar with the lot, check first. Give rope plenty of length so it will not be too close to pulling vehicle in case of a quick stop. It was freaking cold when we went (10 degrees or so). Bundle them chilluns’ good. Drive slowly. Remember, you are trying to make good memories. I kept it steady at 10 mph. Finally, don’t pee your pants from laughing so hard. It freezes.

He has written an eBook about the key to getting anything. It is a top-seller for a reason.

Get out there and live it, and live it loud!

What are you focusing on today? Is it something that will last? Is it a memory you will cherish 10 years from now?

Building a 2-story tree house with my wife and our 4 and 11 year olds will last. Possibly after the tree house and tree are gone, the memory will travel in our minds still. Watching the look of determination in my sons’ eyes as he hammered the nails I had started for him. My daughters excitement in inviting her friends over for her 12th birthday (they slept in the tree house!). My wife measuring twice so that I would only have to cut once, lol. Grandpa even caught the bug and drove nearly two hours one way to offer some much needed help finishing the job (thanks, Grandpa). At the time I was working 50+ hours a week driving a truck. I was tired. But, I looked forward to coming home so I could do more work. I can never get the time back spent on that project. But, how would I have spent it otherwise? Reruns? Sleep? Possibly. Probably.

This may help how to make it happen.

This may read like a forwarded email. But it’s not. This is your life. This is your time. Make the most of it.

In a year from now, will you be satisfied how you spent it?

How about in 5 years?

Would you like to apologize to someone? What’s stopping you?

When is the last time…

I have to thank a buddy of mine named Tim for this. I met Tim at a real estate seminar and we immediately connected. We sat next to each other and chatted during breaks. The seminar was out of town, so, my family travelled with me. Tim spent time with us in the evening and actually played catch with my 2 year old. Tim was quite impressed with the way my boy (Luke) answered,”Ball, ball” for most any question asked him.

This may help how to live a great life.

After the seminar Tim and I stayed in contact. Being that he lived only about a three hour drive he would come and visit on occasion. On one such occasion he showed up unannounced early in the morning. My wife woke me and told me that Tim had ‘dropped’ in. I mumbled something and fell back asleep. Sure enough when I crawled out of bed Tim was there. He spent the day with us and I offered him a spare bed for the night. A bed would have been good for most. But, not for Tim. He insisted that he would sleep on the trampoline in the backyard. It should have come as no surprise. Tim had slept on the roadside in the grass on the way back from the seminar. He was a little tight on money but I think he would have done it anyhow. Some people may sleep on the side of the road or on a trampoline for effect. But, others are like Tim. And, Tim is Tim. At least the trampoline was a step up from the grass.

Tim was content, but, my wife and I thought this a little awkward. We envisioned neighbors calling to report a man sleeping on our trampoline, the swat team surrounding our house, Tim being found near death from the mosquitoes attacking him ferociously throughout the night. Strange thing though. None of this happened. Well, he may have gotten some blood drained (Indiana in the summer…joy, joy). Another thing happened. My children thought Tim was cool. Real cool.

Tim left and time passed. My children didn’t forget though. In fact, they wouldn’t let me forget. “Dad, will you sleep on the trampoline with us?” It sounded fun but I wasn’t sure how to get it in the house. Alas, the delays were no longer working. It was time. I sprayed the lawn to ward off and warn. I hung a sign that read, ‘Rare blood type. Please do not drink.’ We spent time seeing who would be the first to spot a shooting star or UFO. I won. We snuggled under the sleeping bags and fell into a deep contented sleep. Smiles all around. Even on me.

We live but once. So get out there and live it, and live it loud!

It took me sometime to get this through my head. It took me an even a longer time to implement it into my everyday life. I believe it will be of great benefit to you, if it is put into play. Read this article and immediately put this into practice.

Click here to read a great ebook about how to live a great life.

My brief story: Lost in fog. Wanted Mommy and everyone else to get me out. Wanted my friends to lead me. Decided to get out on my own. Got out and never got lost in fog again. Mommy was very proud of me. My friends ask how I did it. And, they lived happily ever after. The end.

That is a true story. My name hasn’t been changed to protect the guilty. I’m not in hiding. Actually, I want to shout it at the top of my lungs. This is what I would shout, “Quit whining and be accountable for yourself, for your actions, and for your life from this point on! If you don’t want it bad enough for yourself, nobody is going to want it for you either! Quit with the little baby excuses. Grow up! Quit talking a good show, and back it up with some action.”

Someone should have said that to me a long time ago. But, they would have been wasting their breath. I wasn’t ready. I was still content on making excuses and blaming everyone else. I wanted someone to hand over the keys to the ‘good life’ and let me drive away. I didn’t really want it, though. If I really wanted it, I wouldn’t have quit. I wouldn’t have expected others to get me there. I would have proved by my actions that I was ‘for real’.

I would have crawled on my hands and knees to get out of that fog. My concern now is that you aren’t ready. If you’re not. This won’t help. This will only help if YOU are ready. Your friends may be ready for you to make it. Your mom (or dad) might be ready for you to make it. But the only thing that matters is that you are ready.

Make the choice today that nothing will hold you back. Make a choice that you will not count on anyone else for getting you out of the fog. Decide that by pure persistence you will come out of the fog. And, if you do that friend. It will be with a smile.

If you are ready to come out of the fog bring your flashlight and visit Rob Adelphia over at Today Has Power.

We are shaped by our decisions. We make decisions all the time. Some are more important than others. Way more important. Other than maybe a little indigestion, what you had for lunch is not going to have a long term impact on you. Of course if you eat greasy burgers everyday for lunch, I reckon it is going to catch up to you soon enough. Short of that, it’s not going to make a big deal. Other decisions will have a huge impact on you. So huge, in fact, they can stay with you for the rest of your life.

A decision to quit something right now can not only impact you but your friends and family, etc. More importantly, it will impact how you view yourself.

Consider these questions:

Are you on the cusp of quitting or breaking through?

Is the finish line out of view for you?

This may help you how to get accomplish anything.

My friend, don’t quit just yet. You are closer than you think. It won’t be as long as you might think.

Consider Thomas Edison and the ten-thousand ways he found for the light bulb NOT to work. Most would have quit before reaching the second failure. More would have quit before getting to ten. Still, more would have quit before reaching one-hundred. How many really would have stuck around for ten-thousand?

This brings us back to you. This brings us back to, ‘Don’t Quit Just Yet.’ When will you quit? Will it be at the next sticking point? Will it be at the very next time there is failure? Or, will you push on? How will people remember you? What will they say? Will they say you were a quitter? Or, will they mention you in the same breath as Thomas Edison? The good thing is that you get to determine this. No one else. You alone will determine whether it is quitting time or just time to stretch and get back to work. This is coming from someone who knows a thing or two about quitting. It wasn’t until I stopped quitting that I began to learn. Boy, did I ever learn.

I learned to trust myself. I learned to be persistent. I learned that I, too, have some Edison in me. And, Edison had some of me. I learned that I could accomplish awesome things if I would just follow this great advice, ‘Don’t Quit Just Yet.’

The first time waster we will address in this series of articles is texting. It may be tough to read through this whole article at one time. The reason? You just might get a text.

We understand that it can be difficult to focus our full attention on one thing. Yet, we are afraid that we might fall out of the loop if we fail to respond. We look at this as part of life. A necessity. Not a burden. Not a time waster.

This may help the key to getting anything

Okay, then, let’s break this down using some time scales and see where we’re at. These are general estimates. I believe I have low balled in most cases.

Texting – People in the U.S. are sending over 4 billion texts a day. For the sake of my point, I am going to assume you are one of them. We will estimate that you send roughly 10 a day and receive the same back. We will say you are an expert texter and it only takes you 20 seconds to write each one and read each one. That’s 4 minutes. It takes you 3 seconds each time to get the phone. That’s 1 minute. It takes another 30 seconds or so to focus back on what you were doing prior to the text and after the text. That’s 12 minutes.

Side note for the sake of sanity here:

This isn’t taking into account if you were recklessly driving while texting. It only takes once for it to be too many. Get real. It isn’t that important. Do a search on the internet and you will learn how many people have been killed because of texting while driving. If you needed a wake-up call. Let this be it. End of side note.

Back to the time element. So far, we’ve covered 17 minutes of your day. This does not account for the time spent dreaming the day away in consideration of an incoming text or the one you will send. Is it safe to say this would have to account for another 5 minutes of your day? That’s 23 minutes.

Taken at the low end here, we are looking at a 23 minute block of your day. For many of you, that is a really low end.

What do you suppose could be accomplished with 20 of those minutes? For instance, if you were to text for only 3 minutes a day, and you were to use the remaining time for building a better you.

Could 20 minutes of reading help? Writing? Exercise?

You are serious about a better you. Isn’t that why you read this?

If so, I suggest checking out Today Has Power where the author of this article, Rob Adelphia, resides.

This is a topic that touches everyone in one way or another. Everyone has been hurt and has also done some hurting. The question is whether we continue to hold onto it or not. I know stories and I’m sure that you do also. Uncle so-and-so hasn’t talked to uncle so-and-so for thirty years because so-and-so A said that so-and-so B wasn’t a very good cook. C’mon people, get serious. If you are holding a grudge against someone for a matter that wasn’t life altering, let’s bury the hatchet today. Let’s pick-up the phone or pen and make some contact. Lead by example, friend. Life is too short. In fact, it is way too short.

This may help how to accomplish anything.

Forgiving (and being forgiven) can be one of the most freeing things received and given. It costs so little, yet, can mean so much to all. One of the ‘breakthroughs’ I’ve enjoyed in my life was asking forgiveness. I sat down got a pen and paper and asked folks that I wronged in some way or another if they would pay me the service of forgiving me. It felt good. Real good. I imagine some people thought it rather odd that one adult would apologize to another adult for something deep in the past. Tough tamales. I said it felt good, didn’t I? Doors opened. People opened. And the world became just a little bit better.

On the other hand. There happen to be some folks either in your life or out that you have not forgiven. Holding a grudge on something not life altering is answered above. But, what if there happens to be some wounds so deep that they were life altering? What if the person doesn’t ask or isn’t looking to be forgiven? Should we for our own good, forgive this person? No. Did you ever think that this person does not deserve forgiveness. A person who shows no willingness to seek forgiveness from you, does not deserve the time of day from you. So, what you must learn to live with isn’t forgiving the unforgivable (person or deed) but rather living with the fact that this person does not deserve it! Put it away. Move on. Enjoy where you are as much as possible and allow your heart to smile at little victories.

In short, if you are holding onto guilt. Apologize. Be done with it. If you are holding some petty offense against someone, open the door and forgive them. Be done with it. If someone has wrecked you in some way and you can’t or don’t want to forgive them. Don’t. But, be done with it and live.
