American Foxhound – A Versatile Dog Breed
The American Foxhound is a large impressive looking breed that closely resembles a Beagle in looks. An American Foxhound’s height is between 21 and 25 inches and the weight ranges from 65 to 75 pounds. This breeds athletic sleek body is covered with a smooth coat of tan and white, red and white or black red and white combination. The strong, straight and well boned legs gave this breed immense speed and stamina.
The American Foxhound is a very old breed – older than America, the country it was named after. The breed originated from the pack of English hunting dogs that was brought to the Crown Colony by Robert Brooke in 1650.
These excellent hunting dogs were highly valued in their country of origin. These dogs are favorite hunting companions of the British landed gentry. In a fox hunt, hunters on horseback follow packs of American Foxhounds. A change in the deep melodious voice of the dog signifies that a prey is found. The dogs are used by the settlers of the Crown colony to hunt foxes as well. American Foxhound is a ferocious breed thus it was rumored that the dog have been used by the colonizers to hunt Indians.
The English Foxhounds were crossed and re-crossed with the dogs of settlers from Ireland and France until a new breed that has adapted to the conditions of the new country has evolved. This has resulted to the development of the American Foxhound.
The American Foxhound was actually developed to be a hunting dog. This dogs would love nothing more than to hunt. This breed is equipped with a sensitive scenting ability, strength and stamina and a strong prey drive. Once this dog has found an interesting scent nothing can stop the dog from trailing the prey. Foxes are the usual quarry of American Foxhounds but these dogs hunts other animals too.It is not surprising if this breed is on the top list most valued hunting dogs.
The breed has excellent hunting prowess is basically the reason why these dogs are highly valued. However, apart from the hunting prowess, these dogs are valued as well for their loving and gentle nature. These energetic dogs turn into placid pets with gentle disposition at home. This breed of dogs, unlike other breeds, does not give its loyalty to just one person. An American Foxhound loves all the members of the family but the dogs are noted to be especially friendly and affectionate with the children.
