Self-Help: Handling The Crap In Your Head

Do you have crap in your head? Of course you have – we all have. However, if you’re paying attention to the crap in your head, you’re just creating the crap that you have in your life. You’re what you’re thinking. Sadly, it’s not just the thoughts that you know you’re thinking that create your life, it’s a little more subtle than that. In actual fact, more than anything else, you are what you think subconsciously. Your subconscious mind runs – or ruins – your life. All of your behaviour, every single thing you do, every single reactions and every single interaction with others – with those who are close to you, companions, workmates and even with people who you don’t even know – are all dictated by your subconscious. And the big problem is that, because of the way your subconscious mind is wired, all this happens automatically.

However, there’s an even bigger problem. Your subconscious mind is full of crap. It’s crap because it’s irrelevant to who you are or what you’re supposed to be doing right here, right now. The crap is a hangover from your childhood, when you were young and impressionable – from your formative years. And, even though all your behaviour happens subconsciously, every so often you actually know that this crap is ruining your life. at times you might feel down, suffer from stress, negative or depressed. You might feel that you’re useless, shy or inadequate. Sometimes, or in certain situations, you might feel anxious or nervous. Perhaps you feel that you lack self-confidence or that you’re being dragged down by low self-esteem. But this is just crap created by crap! This is the crap that has your life on hold – and you’re letting it happen by paying attention, whether you’re aware of it or not, to the crap that’s lodged in your head.

Getting Yourself Going When You Simply Feel Flat

There are occasions when we simply feel lifeless – perhaps not dejected, disillusioned or depressed, just lifeless, energy-less and disinterested. And even though I’ve been teaching my many personal development clients how to start each day by focusing their minds – and I do it myself – sometimes, within no time at all, one ends up feeling, like, ‘I wish I wasn’t here!’ or ‘I just don’t feel like doing this!’ I’m not talking about things going wrong during the day, I’m simply referring to what one client described like this: ‘I get into my office, full of beans, I sit down at my desk, start going through my emails and, suddenly, I’m in this kind of daze.’

What takes the wind out of our sails so effortlessly? How come we can be so fired up one minute and then suddenly so flat? Well, the answer is all too simple – flat is your default state of mind. Yeah, believe it or not, research explains that only the very rare person is tuned in sufficiently to actually be appropriately attentive and focused to get through the normal day effectively. As if that wasn’t enough, research also proves that, left to its own devices, our minds simply drift into negativity. It’s how we’re hard-wired – and all the personal development or self improvement in the world won’t personal development or self improvement isn’t going to change the hardware.

Self-Help: You’re Not Your Behaviour

Normal behaviour is rarely appropriate. How could it be! Because normal behaviour is created automatically – you don’t have to think about it, you just react – by your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is highly efficient at enabling you react – it is this ability that has got us so far as the ‘superior’ species. But, as I said, normal behaviour is rarely appropriate – because the subconscious mind is permanently focused in the past – your formative years – and it uses this past ‘stored knowledge’ to dictate today’s automatic behaviour. With information that is way past its sell-by date being used to enable you react, how is your behaviour going to be appropriate to what is actually going on now?

How could it be right and proper when you understand that the normal person is constantly on automatic pilot? Unfortunately, it’s just the way we’re built. If you’re having a good day, your behaviour may be mildly effective – that’s compared to how effective you could actually be had you taken the trouble to pay attention and act, rather than react. But even then, normal people only have good days every so often. It’s the normal not-too-bad days that have consigned your life to that repetitive, mundane, not-so-bad life – you know, the one where good stuff almost never happens, the one where you’re unhappy in your work or the one where your relationship has gone flat – the ordinary stuff of everyday life. And on those everyday not-so-bad days, your behaviour can be anything from midldly in-effective to inappropriate to completely outrageous. People losing their cool in traffic jams, people who bully their workmates or who play with their workers’ lives. Husbands who beat wives, wives who beat husbands – or just the normal not-so-bad apathy of ‘I wish I was doing something else’ and all the stress that that brings with it.

Is Your Life Ruined By Nerves, Worry, Stress?

Do you ever feel tense or anxious? Do you regularly worry? Do you suffer from your nerves? Do you get easily ruffled? Do you feel that you suffer from stress? However, psychology explains that your personality is an accumulation of snapshots of events and people that made an impression on you when you were a young child – what we normally call our formative years. You snapped photos of these things because they were big enough to make you feel good or bad about yourself at the time. Unfortunately, psychology also tells us that the normal mind is much more likely to dwell on the negative rather than the positive snapshots.

Is Your Life Grinding To A Halt? A Little Personal Development Is Called For

The majority of my Personal Development clients, when I meet them for the first time, feel that they’ve become stuck – maybe they feel that they’ve hit the so-called brick wall, or they feel that they’re going through the motions or that, in some vague way, they sense that there must be more to life than the daily ritual that passes for living. Indeed, one individual said to me “Oh God, I can’t even get excited about my holidays anymore, we’re going to the same place in July that we’ve been for the last six years”.

Everything becomes stale in life unless you constantly keep renewing and reinventing. However, But it’s not your life that grinds to a shuddering halt, it’s you! Or, more correctly, it’s actually your state of mind that becomes so anaesthetized by the continual routine that passes for living, that you simply disappear into oblivion. The problem is that you stopped experiencing new things as you progressed through your teenage years. The normal mind is wide open to all new experiences during our childhood years – that’s when our sponge-like capacity to take everything in means that we were, in fact, taking everything in. By 11 or twelve, we started closing up shop. By nineteen or twenty, we were a done deal. After that, with the exception of truly momentous events in our lives – like the birth of a child, or a bereavement – we experience nothing much. We think we are experiencing, but in fact, what our subconscious mind is doing is interpreting everything on the basis of old stored knowledge and pigeonholing the new event accordingly. Effectively, the normal adult state of mind is completely unaware, numb, reactive, divorced from reality and simply going through the motions.
